Ruby Rose breaks silence following sudden 'Batwoman' exit

The genderfluid actress isn't burying the rumours of behind-the-scenes drama after sharing a cryptic statement on social media.

Batwoman fans were left shocked and confused earlier this month when it was announced that series lead Ruby Rose would not be returning for the show's already-announced second season.

Rose had helped break new ground for LGBTQ superhero representation on TV as lesbian hero Kate Kane on the Greg Berlanti-produced CW series, but left the future of the series in doubt after it was announced she had left the show after just one season.

After The CW assured fans that the second season would still go ahead with a new - and, importantly, LGBTQ - actress in the role, Rose has now broken her silence with cryptic statement on social media which hints at plenty of behind-the-scenes drama.

"Thank you everyone for coming on this journey. If I mentioned everyone it would be 1000 tags.. but thank you to the cast, crew, producers and studio", the genderfluid Australian actress, 34, wrote on Instagram on Thursday (28 May).

"It wasn’t an easy decision but those who know, know."

Rose, who made her name as a model before moving into TV work on Australia's Next Top Model and Orange Is the New Black, went on: "I didn’t want to not acknowledge everyone involved and how big this was for TV and for our community.

"I have stayed silent because that’s my choice for now but know I adore you all.

"I’m sure next season will be amazing also. *hangs up cowl and cape."

The second season of Batwoman is slated for a January 2021 release, and Berlanti Productions and WBTV previously reassured viewers that they remain committed to the "long-term future" of the series despite Rose's exit.

"We – along with the show's talented creative team – look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months," they added.
