George Michael's first posthumous single has been released ahead of the imminent arrival Last Christmas, the new Paul Fieg-directed rom-com inspired by the late star's music.

Co-written and co-produced by Michael and collaborator James Jackman, 'This Is How (We Want You To Get High)' first original material fans have heard from Michael since 2012, and comes almost three years after the singer's sudden death from natural causes on Christmas Day 2016.

Recorded in London between 2012 and 2015, in what turn out to be Michael's final recording sessions, 'This is How (We Want You to Get High' is a darkly funky slice of folk-pop that, according to Michael's label, sees the star "addressing society’s ills with his trademark blend of self-deprecation and wry humour."

A statement from Michael's sisters Melanie and Yioda, father Jack, and longtime manager David Austin reads: “We hope fans and lovelies! everywhere rejoice in hearing this great new song written as ever with Yog‘s immense passion and pride.

This new track we proudly send as his gift to you this season to bring you all love and festive joy... Whoever you worship... Whoever you love....".

'This Is How (We Want You To Get High)' is the only original song from Michael to feature on the soundtrack to Last Christmas, which features tracks from both George's time in '80s pop duo Wham! and as a solo artist.

Starring Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke and Crazy Rich Asians' Henry Golding, the film is already attracting mixed reviews, despite having a script co-written by Oscar-winning Emma Thompson.

Still, with Michael's music set to provide the background to a warm-hearted festive offering during the season so closely associated with his life and death, we can't help but get the feels already...

Last Christmas hits cinemas in the US this Friday 8 November and in the UK next Friday 15 November.
